For most South African businesses, Google Ads cost will start around R10,000 - R15,000 per month when factoring in Google cost, VAT and management fees.

Quick summary

  • Typical total cost: R10,000 to R15,000 a month for a small South African business, once media spend, VAT and management are added together.
  • Cost per click varies wildly by industry: from the R5.03 a dentist may pay on Google to R58.63 in insurance and financial services.1
  • We examined both Ahrefs and Google Keyword Planner data. Ahrefs CPC came in below Google's own Keyword Planner.2
  • Most cost estimates fall in a range. The industry vertical will also dramatically impact the advertising bidding range.

Some industries are more competitive than others. Google's advertising system is auction based and some industries are naturally more expensive. This is reflected in a number called cost per click or CPC for short. It's the cost of buying one click on Google.

Later on I'll show you how we can estimate and determine your Google Ads budget based on your industry's average CPC rate (and include a few other estimates in order to determine what you need for success in Google Ads).

What the data shows & our insights

  • You'll notice that the average search volume per industry varies widely (see how storage units have increased 900% year over year). This is only based on a single keyword and there could be many more keywords applicable to your industry.
  • The estimated click cost is not what you'll necessarily pay. Factors such as quality score and ultimately, ad rank will determine where you rank and your cost per click.
Key insight: Use Google's Keyword Planner in order to generate a full list of keywords and media plans for your business.

The full breakdown of Google Ads costs

There are three figures you would need to think of as a business before starting with Google Ads:

  • Media spend: what Google bills you for clicks. This is what almost everyone means when they say "budget", and it's the only one of the three that appears in a benchmark table.
  • VAT: Google charges 15% VAT on South African ad spend. If your business is a registered VAT vendor, you claim it back as input tax and your effective cost is the ex-VAT figure.3
  • Management: the agency retainer, the freelancer's invoice, or the internal salary cost of the person creating your account, keywords and writing ads on your behalf. You can do this yourself, but it's still a cost to account for in time.

Together, they look like this:

Cost lineSmall local businessGrowing ecommerce store
Media spendR8,000R25,000
VAT (15%)R1,200R3,750
ManagementR3,500R7,500
Total monthly costR12,700R36,250

Determine your Google Ads cost

From my experience, if you want to generate leads, you can expect a conversion rate of 1-3%. With 100 clicks that's 1-3 enquiries. Now estimate your average cost per click and then you can determine your Google spend.

Example: at an estimated conversion rate of 3%, click cost of R8 and total clicks of 1000, a business can expect to spend R8,000 and generate 30 enquiries.

If you run an online store, our ecommerce budget calculator works through the same numbers with your own figures.

Pro tip: If your budget falls below the 30 conversions per month, don't run smart bidding. Switch to manual CPC or maximise clicks, restrict yourself to exact match on a short keyword list, target a single location, and send all traffic to one landing page you've properly optimised.

How Google Ads click cost shifts in South Africa through the year

Auction prices aren't static, and a few local patterns are predictable enough to plan around.

  • Q4 and Black Friday: retail CPCs climb steadily through November as the year's remaining budgets converge on the same auctions. Either build the increase into your forecast or shift spend forward into October, when the same audience is cheaper to reach.
  • Mid-December to mid-January: most of the country stops working but demand for travel skyrockets. B2B demand drops sharply and doesn't recover until schools go back.
  • Pay day: consumer conversion rates lift around month-end and worker pay day. Expect an increase in demand.
  • Grid reliability: demand for solar, inverters and backup power tracks electricity supply news closely. If you sell in that category, both your volume and your costs move on events outside your control.
  • The rand: Google bills in rands, but some of the advertisers bidding against you plan in dollars and pounds.

What marketing agencies charge to manage Google Ads accounts

There are many different cost structures agencies in South Africa will use. Here are a few examples of rates:

ModelTypical structureWorks when
Percentage of spend10-20% of monthly mediaSpend is stable and moderate
Flat retainerFixed monthly feeSpend is large or fluctuates
Day rate / projectBilled per day or per engagementYou need a fix, an audit, or setup

Frequently asked questions

How much do Google Ads cost in South Africa?

Most South African businesses spend R10,000 to R15,000 a month once media spend, 15% VAT and management are combined. Media spend alone typically starts around R8,000. Cost per click ranges from roughly R3 in ecommerce categories to over R100 in insurance and financial services.

Is R1,000 a month enough for Google Ads?

It's not. R1,000 a month works out to R33 a day, which buys about one click a day in a competitive services auction. That's insufficient data for automated bidding and insufficient volume for you to judge results. Even in a low-CPC category with tight targeting, it's not recommended.

Do you pay VAT on Google Ads in South Africa?

Yes, 15% VAT applies to South African ad spend. Registered VAT vendors claim it back as input tax, so the effective cost is the ex-VAT amount. Businesses that aren't registered carry an unrecoverable 15% on top of every budget.

What's a good Google Ads budget for a small business in South Africa?

Calculate it backwards from your target cost per lead or sale, multiplied by 30, because automated bidding needs roughly 30 conversions a month to perform reliably.

How much does Google Ads cost per 1,000 clicks?

That would be dependent on your average cost per click. If your average CPC is R8, you would pay R8,000 for 1,000 clicks as an example.

Is it worth paying for Google Ads?

Yes - if your numbers work. Determine what each customer is worth and run the numbers. Google Ads is used in almost every industry. The only exception is very specific B2B services where no one uses Google to actively search for products.

How much do YouTube ads cost in South Africa?

YouTube ads use the same quality score and ad rank system. Typically you will see much lower CPM rates on YouTube than on Google Search ads.
